Veneto

Veneto is an Italian language spoken in the area around Venice, Padova, Verona, Vicenza, Treviso, Feltre, and Belluno in Italy and by Italian immigrants in many parts of the world, including Mexico.

In 1882 a group of Italian immigrants arrived in the Mexican highlands and founded a new town, Chipilo, in the Valley of Puebla.  Most of the colonists came from Segusino and nearby towns located in the valley of the Piave River in the Veneto region.  Few of the new immigrants spoke standard Italian; almost all of them spoke the Basso-Bellunese variety of Veneto.  This variety became the language of Chipilo.  Although everyone in Chipilo knows Spanish, almost everyone is also fluent in Veneto.  In fact it is still the first language learned by children.  The Italian town of Segusino and the Mexican town of Chipilo became twin cities in 1982, renewing the ties which still bind their inhabitants after more than one hundred and thirty years.

The map below indicates the branches of the Veneto language family that are spoken between Venice and Belluno.
